My Journey: More than just clothes

From the time I was a little girl, I’ve loved clothes and, of course, shopping. My momma always dressed me in the cutest sets and dresses, and she had an eye for unique pieces when she was younger. As I got older, shopping became something special that I shared with my grandma (Naw Naw). She would always buy me clothes, and we especially loved our trips to Target and Cato.

When I finally had my own money to shop, I wanted to stretch every dollar, finding ways to get more for less. I naturally gravitated toward timeless pieces like cardigans, dress pants, and layers. This was long before they became trendy in the early 2000s. I had an eye for more mature styles that most teenagers weren’t wearing, and I was layering outfits before it was cool. But of course, I also wanted to stay on trend and loved seeing what new styles were coming out. Dressing up and putting outfits together has always been second nature to me. I knew from an early age that I wanted to do something with fashion.

For a while, I thought about becoming a designer…until I realized I couldn’t draw to save my life.

When I got a job at a clothing store, I was in awe. Being surrounded by fashion every day, seeing the new arrivals, and dressing mannequins felt exciting. I worked my way up to assistant manager, but over time, I realized the retail world wasn’t for me. I loved the styling aspect, but I wanted more! I just didn’t know what that more was yet. Eventually, I moved on to another job, but my passion for fashion never faded.

But when I saw people sharing their outfits on Instagram, I thought, I can do this… but I want to do it differently. I didn’t just want to showcase fashion, I wanted to make it accessible. I wanted to help people find stylish, confidence-boosting outfits without spending a fortune.

At the time, I wasn’t seeing many people talk about sales, promo codes, or budget-friendly styling. I loved seeing fashion content, but I also knew that for most people (myself included) spending a few hundred dollars on a single outfit wasn’t realistic. Not everyone shops at Saks, Nordstrom, or Chanel. Some of us want to look good and be smart with our money…whether that means saving, traveling, investing in fine dining, or simply enjoying life without financial stress.

So, in 2017, I officially launched Centsible Blonde, a name that came to me when I combined “cents” and “sensible.” It felt like the perfect fit to reflect my love for stylish, budget-friendly fashion. Plus, everyone knew me for my long, naturally blonde hair, so it just clicked. I wanted to create a space where I could show people how to embrace affordable fashion without sacrificing style or quality because, to me, you don’t have to spend a fortune to look great.

I didn’t come from a long line of business owners, and I didn’t know many people who were pursuing their own entrepreneurial paths. What started out as a hobby, and still feels like one in many ways, meant navigating the business side of things on my own. There was no clear guide or blueprint, but as challenging as it was, it was also intriguing and exciting. Figuring it all out kept me motivated, knowing I was building something from scratch.

This journey hasn’t been a straight path. Life happens. I’ve had to put content creation on the back burner a lot—between work, health challenges, the pandemic, and just struggling with consistency. And honestly? Sometimes, I’m just all over the place. I’ve fought the algorithm. I’ve battled self-doubt. In the beginning, I was so shy about posting because no one around me really got what I was doing. Growth hasn’t been easy.

But despite it all, I always come back to this. Because fashion, for me, has never been just about clothes.

It’s about confidence: learning to wear bold colors when everyone else wears black. It’s about pushing myself out of my comfort zone and embracing my own unique style. And it’s about helping others do the same.

For eight years, I’ve built this…sometimes slowly, sometimes inconsistently, but always with heart. I love styling outfits and inspiring people through colors, textures, trends, and basics. I’ve always been the friend people come to when they need to know what looks good, what’s on sale, or if I have a coupon for a certain store. And when my own closet gets full, my pieces get a second life, I donate, pass them along to friends, or sell them on Poshmark and at yard sales, making sure they continue to bring joy to someone else.

And while I technically share other brands’ products, this…what I do is still a small business. Every like, comment, share, and purchase made through my links supports me…a person with a dream, a passion, and a desire to help others feel good in what they wear.

So, if you’ve ever engaged with my content, followed along, or shopped through my links—THANK YOU! Your support means the world. And if you’re new here, I’d love for you to be part of this community.

I know the space is saturated, but I also know I still have a place here. Growth may be slow, but I have faith. And, I’m just getting started!

Thank you for reading! Now, do the sensible thing: share this post, follow along, and let’s keep this fashion journey going together!

XOXO, Brittney
